Things Not To Feed Pet Birds
Every contentious parrot owner needs to know what to never feed pet birds. There are a few foods that can kill a parrot quickly. However, other than the foods noted below, feed your pet birds anything you eat within limitations noted in this article plus either a pellet-based or seed-based diet. This will ensure they live long and are healthy.
The first think to keep in mind about what to never feed pet birds is chocolate. Not only can chocolate kill parrots, but dogs and cats have died as a result of ingesting chocolate. Since a parrot's body weight is so small, only a little can result in death.
Avocado is another item on the list of what to never feed pet birds. The avocado meat near the seed has resulted in the death of pet birds and therefore it is just a good practice to not offer this food to your birds. With the many good fruits to offer, they won't miss the avocado. Avocado includes guacamole as well.
Fresh fruit seeds should not be included in a pet bird's food dish. Take the seed from apples, oranges, grapes and other fruits because the bird could crack the seed and ingest parts of it. Some of these seeds contain deadly substances.
Keep in mind never to let a parrot get its beak on any uncooked meat or egg product. There is too much danger of bacteria attacking the parrot. Also, on the list of what never to feed pet birds is any food that appears to be spoiled. If you wouldn't eat it, don't offer it to your parrot!
Foods that are high in fat should be limited. Sunflower seeds are high in fact and shouldn't become the basis of the bird's diet but a few are okay. Any food that is spread with butter, is cooked in oil or otherwise high in fact should be strictly limited.
Foods that are high in salt must be avoided as well. There is sufficient salt in the foods the parrot eats to fill the nutritional requirements and too much is unhealthy for humans and birds.
What never to feed pet birds includes the fact that only small amounts of sugar can be permitted. Parrots can often become junk food junkies and want cookies and cake. Don't let them have but a bite or two once in a while.
If you feed your parrot a balanced diet of good fresh fruits and vegetables, people foods and its basic pellet or seed diet, your pet birds can live for a long, long time. If you want to have your companion around and healthy, remember what to never feed pet birds. Then offer everything else to your parrot!
So develop a broader sense of birding. Bring birds around more often and dance to the tune of their music while you get and keep them in your area longer with bird feeders.
